The Road to SF

In this series, I’ll be documenting my progress toward a goal I’ve set for myself: getting to under 200 pounds. A feat that I haven’t been able to accomplish since… well, since I weighed under 200 pounds. Most likely around 2001. I looked sort of like this at that time:

Just kidding, this is when I was like 13. Not far off of the weight though, I’m sure.

Now, I’ve set many goals in the past and I’ve started many diets that have failed, but I’m hoping this will be different. Not only am I going to make this very public (increasing my accountability), I’m also going about this with a different overall purpose: lifestyle change.

In the past, I’ve lost weight simply with the focus of wanting to look better shirtless. Unfortunately, the drive wears off after a while. Especially after you deem yourself attractive. At the age of 33, I’ve decided that I want something more than that from this bag of bones. I want things like these:

  • The ability to do most physical challenges
  • To not wake up feeling like shit
  • To have not painful joints for no reason
  • To stop having gout flare-ups (yes I have gout, and yes, it sucks)
  • To have nice clothes that fit well
  • To not be out of breath doing dumb small things
  • To not be so much larger than my pretty girlfriend
  • Living a little longer

It turns out, as you get older, it becomes a lot harder to make changes to habits you’ve developed a long time ago. It’s also a lot easier to be complacent, and simply accept that you’re a fat shit. Well, I’m tired of that. I was recently confronted by my undesirable body while on vacation:

Well, we all have to start somewhere, and today is my metaphorical line in the sand…

To help me stay on the right path, I’ll be making some diet changes, some habit changes, and some workout changes. I’ll be keeping track of them on this blog, so keep a look out for posts with “The Road to SF” in the title. I’ll be including my weight and some food/workout hurdles I’ve faced recently along with other ramblings or insights. Fun!

Oh, and as for the title itself, it’s my reward for being successful. Once I hit my weight goal (199.9lbs.), I’m going on a trip to SF to dome some bike riding with my brother.

Let’s do it!
